Safe Medications

Approved Medication During Pregnancy

Discuss with your health care provider if you are currently taking ANY or plan to take NEW medications. It is important, that you inform your provider of any allergies or problems you have experienced with past medications.

Medication

Headache
  • Acetaminophen or Paracetamol 500mg every 4 hours or 1gr (2 tablets) every 6 hours
Heartburn
  • Chewable: calcium carbonate (TUMS)
  • Liquid: Magnesium / Aluminum Hydroxide (Mylanta), Famotidine (Pepcid); Omeprazole (Prilosec)
Hemorrhoids
  • Hydrocortisone cream or suppositories (Preparation H)
  • Witch Hazel Pads (Tucks pads)
Nausea
  • Nausea bracelets (Sea-Band, Reliefband®)
  • Ginger, Lemon, or Peppermint (ale, tea, candy, etc.)
  • Doxylamine 25mg or 50mg (Unisom) along with Vitamin B6
Seasonal Allergies
  • Cetirizine 10mg (Zyrtec) once a day
  • Loratadine 10mg (Claritin) once a day
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) every 6-8 hours
  • Budesonide nasal spray (Rhinocort®) usually 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril once or twice a day or as directed by your doctor
Stool Softeners
  • Docusate Sodium (Colace)
  • Bulk agents / fiber products (Metamucil)
  • Polyethylene glycol 3350 (MiraLAX)
For Sore Throat
  • Phenol Oral Anesthetic Spray (Chloraseptic)
  • Throat Lozenges / Cough Drops (Ricola, Halls)
  • Acetaminophen 500mg every 4 hours or 1gr (2 tablets) every 6 hours
Cough
  • Guaifenesin Dextromethorpham (Robitussin DM) use after 12 weeks of pregnancy; AVOID phenylephrine
  • Guaifenesin (Mucinex) use after 12 weeks of pregnancy; AVOID pseudoephedrine
Nasal Congestion
  • Steam Inhalers
  • Saline nasal drops; AVOID oxymetazoline (Afrin®)
  • Budesonide nasal spray (Rhinocort®) usually 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril once or twice a day or as directed by your doctor
Sleep Aids
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) at bedtime
  • Doxylamine (Unisom) at bedtime
